Intent
At St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, we value Art and Design as part of a creative curriculum. We aim to encourage children to express their individual ideas, thoughts and interests and provide experiences that develop and extend their skills. We intend to inspire and challenge pupils, allowing them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
Implementation
Children will be given the opportunity to enhance their skills using a range of media and textiles. They are able to explore drawing, painting, printing, textiles, collage, 3D pieces and digital art. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.
After they have completed their artwork, children then have the opportunity to evaluate the finished work in order to allow them to be reflective and think about how they can make changes and keep improving. Parents are invited to come into school and celebrate Art work created by children during Art celebration times.
We visit local galleries and have visiting artists to broaden children’s experiences of Art and Art techniques. The skills children acquire throughout the Art and Design curriculum are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.
National curriculum:
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
· produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
· become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
· evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
· know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Impact
The aim of our art curriculum is to build a progression of skills through the school that is evident when viewing the celebration of the art on display and during our parent open days.
Our children will have gained knowledge of different styles of art, art history and developed preferences that will influence their creative thinking in the future.
We also aim to have given the children skills that will make them evaluative and reflective learners who are engaged with their learning.
