The national curriculum for geography aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
- understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
- are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
- collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
- interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes etc
- communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
At St Peter’s we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum at St Peter’s enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at St Peter’s Primary and also to their further education and beyond.
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in Geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Geography is taught in regular blocks, focusing on knowledge and skills as stated in the National Curriculum. At St Peter’s, we ensure that Geography enables children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences; For example, using the local area to follow maps in Key Stage 1, to comparing the similarities and differences in environments and communities in Lower Key Stage 2, through to debating world issues on pollution and climate change in Upper Key Stage 2.
Through our teaching, resources and visits to our local area, we will attempt to excite and intrigue our children to find out more about the world around them. We will develop deep subject knowledge and key skills while differentiating work for all abilities and we have an on-going monitoring system that helps staff ensure that all topics and skills are being taught in relevant year groups.
Standards in Geography will be high and will match standards in other subjects such as English and Maths with teacher judgements being discussed and monitored in line with the skills progression. Outcomes in topic books evidence a broad and balanced Geography curriculum and demonstrate children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge as well as show a range of topics covered, cross curriculum links and differentiated work. As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. We want the children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
